The quickest path to achieving dramatic weight loss and improved physical condition is
without a doubt having a coach or personal trainer guide you through your exercise and weight
loss program.   A coach or trainer will hold you accountable through the early stages of your
program and be there to make sure you are performing all the exercises the right way to ensure
you get the maximum effectiveness out of every rep you do.
Think about it.  What is the difference between a successful team and one that fails to live
up to its potential?  Nine times out of ten it is the guidance and oversight they receive from a
knowledgeable coach.  In fact, a revealing quote that summed up the impact of the great John
Wooden, the legendary basketball coach at UCLA, was “He could beat your team with his, and
his team with yours.”  What this meant was that the little extra that John Wooden brought to any
team he coached through his understanding of the game was enough to make the difference
between winning and losing.
Why do some of the most successful individual athletes like Tiger Woods, Michael
Phelps, or Maria Sharapova, athletes who you might think no longer need any advice on what it
takes to win, still rely on coaches and trainers to keep them at the top of their game?  It’s because
they know and trust that their coaches and trainers can help them make the necessary
adjustments that they could not make on their own.
A good coach or trainer will take your personal attributes and your goals into
consideration when it comes to designing and moving you through your exercise and weight loss
program.  They will be there to instruct you on perfect form, to guide you and answer questions
that may come up as you work through your program, and push you at those times when with
just a little more effort the rewards can be heightened.
It’s important to find a coach or trainer who is experienced and who you know you can
trust.  After all, you are depending on them to provide you with the motivation to reach the
fitness level you have set for yourself.  You must feel comfortable discussing your expectations
and concerns and know that they are putting your welfare and safety first and foremost when
working with you.
A coach or personal trainer can make a dramatic difference when it comes to getting your
body into the best shape imaginable.  If you want to start off on the right track and get the
greatest benefit from your workout, perhaps a coach or personal trainer is for you.

Simple Math – Use up more than you take in…

The reasons diets alone really don’t lead to long lasting weight loss is because at some
time during every diet, the body begins breaking down lean muscle tissue to create fat.  This is
disastrous for two reasons.  One, the body has found a new source of fat and learns to generate
fat on its own without the need for food.   Second and most importantly, by eliminating lean
muscle from the body the most vital means of fat burning is being destroyed.
Just as importantly, exercise alone won’t take off the pounds, especially if it is only
aerobic exercise.  What sense does it make to work out for hours on the treadmill or stair climber
machine to burn off 500 or more calories and then reward yourself for pushing so hard with a
sports drink that may contain 600 calories or more?  Do the math.   You’re losing the battle.
The real key to losing, and keeping weight off, is to eat a healthy, low-fat diet that does
not starve the body and to mix aerobic exercise with weight bearing exercise to build muscle
tissue, and therefore burn more calories than are taken in.  It’s that simple.
An important thing to remember is that exercise will make you hungry and it’s been
shown that people actually eat more on days when they work out than when they don’t.  What’s
the solution?  Well, one good thing is now that you know this, you can plan for it by packing a
healthy protein snack to eat after you work out.  Another is to drink plenty of water, which as we
described earlier this will help the body feel full and eliminate the need for high calorie sports
drinks after a workout.
Last year Americans spent over $46 billion on diet products and self-help books
according to Forbes Magazine.  Recent estimates are that over 45 million Americans belong to
fitness clubs and that over $19 billion a year is spent on gym memberships.  If you factor in the
millions upon millions that are spent on exercise equipment and you can see that Americans
spend a lot of money and a lot of time exercising and going on diets.
Yet we are still a fat nation.  Why?  Because we aren’t doing the simple math that any
third grader could do.  Eat less, but don’t starve.  Exercise smart, and gain muscle.  Use up more
calories than you eat!
